China’s Xi Jinping visiting Saudi Arabia in bid to boost economic growth

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is attending a pair of regional summits in Saudi Arabia this week amid efforts to kick-start economic growth weighed down by strict anti-COVID-19 measures. The Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Xi will attend the inaugural China-Arab States Summit and a meeting with leaders of the six nations that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council in the Saudi capital of Riyadh. His state visit to Saudi Arabia will end on Saturday. China is the world’s second largest economy and a major source of outward investment. To fuel massive demand, it imports half its oil, of which half of those imports come from Saudi Arabia, amounting to tens of billions of dollars annually. China’s economic growth had been on a steady decline for years and was dealt... read more...

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi campaigns for Georgia Senate runoff

Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has campaigned in Georgia to organize and galvanize the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community ahead of the crucial Senate run-off. Democratic Party’s Senator Raphael Warnock is fighting a tough battle against his Republican opponent Herschel Walker in the critical election race, the result of which would decide whether his party would gain majority in the 100-member Senate, or it would be a tie like the current one wherein both the party’s had 50 seat each, with the Vice President casting her crucial vote in the event of a tie. I’m proud to be campaigning for Senator Warnock in Georgia and urging members of the AAPI and South Asian community to door knock and ‘Warnock’ for the Senator because of how important this...                  read more...

Amnesty International Canada says was target of China-sponsored hack

The Canadian branch of Amnesty International said Monday it was the target of a cyber attack sponsored by China. The human rights organization said it first detected the breach on October 5, and hired forensic investigators and cybersecurity experts to investigate. Ketty Nivyabandi, Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada, said the searches in their systems were specifically and solely related to China and Hong Kong, as well as a few prominent Chinese activists. The hack left the organization offline for nearly three weeks. US cybersecurity firm Secureworks said a threat group sponsored or tasked by the Chinese state was likely behind the attack because there was no attempt to monetize the access, the nature of the searches, the level of sophistication and the use of specific tools which are distinctive of China-sponsored...                             read more...

Will expand temporary legal status for Haitians residing in country: US

The Biden administration said Monday that it would expand temporary legal status for Haitians already living in the United States, determining conditions in the Caribbean nation were too dangerous for their forced return. The Homeland Security Department said Haitians who were in the United States November 6 could apply for Temporary Protected Status and those who were granted it last year could stay an additional 18 months until August 3, 2024. The administration has extended temporary status for several countries and expanded or introduced it for Haiti, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Myanmar, Cameroon and Venezuela, reversing a Trump-era trend to cut back on protections for those already in the United States. What’s the future of Qatar’s stadiums once the Fifa World Cup is over

The World Cup stadium was designed to leave a minimal footprint in the Qatari sand. It’s now due to be dismantled. Stadium 974 played host to seven matches, the last of which was Brazil’s 4-1 win over South Korea in the round of 16 on Monday. The Qataris say the stadium will disappear, but it isn’t clear when that will happen. The Gulf country will soon stage an Asian Cup, the multi-sport Asian Games and maybe even an Olympics. A look at FIFA requirements for World Cup stadiums and what happens next for Qatar’s venues. WHAT DID QATAR NEED? FIFA has clear specifications for a World Cup host’s...      read more...

BRAD FRIEDEL: Gregg Berhalter should stay as US coach, but his team will be shocked by Holland’s loss

OPEC, allied producers’ targets remain same amid sanctions against Russia

The Saudi-led OPEC oil cartel and allied producers, including Russia, did not change their targets for shipping oil to the global economy amid uncertainty about the impact of new Western sanctions against Russia that could take significant amounts of oil off the market. The decision at a meeting of oil ministers Sunday comes a day ahead of the planned start of two measures aimed at hitting Russia’s oil earnings in response to its invasion of Ukraine. Those are: a European Union boycott of most Russian oil and a price cap of USD 60 per barrel on Russian exports imposed by the EU and the Group of Seven democracies. It is not yet clear how much Russian oil the two sanctions measures could take off the global market, which would tighten supply and drive up prices. The world’s No. 2 oil producer has... read more...

Blinken vows US support for Israel despite unease over govt

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday the US will not shrink from its unwavering support for Israel despite stark differences with Prime Minister-elect Benjamin Netanyahu and concerns the Biden administration may have about potential members of his incoming right-wing government. Speaking to a left-leaning group that some on the right accuse of being too sympathetic to the Palestinians and Iran, Blinken said the United States will remain a stalwart friend of Israel even as it pursues goals that Netanyahu has opposed, including a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a restoration of the languishing 2015 Iran nuclear deal. The US-Israel partnership and all that it’s produced for the people of our nations and the world has always been underwritten by the United States ironclad commitment to.... read more...

Apple Blocks NFT Transfers From Coinbase Wallet App on iOS

Coinbase has stopped NFT transfers from its wallet app on iOS after being left with no choice by Apple. The US-based crypto exchange made the announcement via a tweet on December 1, citing Apple’s unreasonable demands for the decision.    The exchange claims that Apple blocked its latest app release until it disabled the  NFT transfer feature . The bone of contention is the blockchain fee that is charged for any NFT transfers. Apple wants a 30% cut on the fees, so it required the transfers to go through its in-app purchase system.   You might have noticed you can’t send NFTs on Coinbase Wallet iOS anymore. This is because Apple blocked our last app release until we disabled the feature. — Coinbase Wallet (@CoinbaseWallet)  December 1, 2022 However, that is problematic for several reasons. First, the Apple system doesn’t support crypto payments. Blockchain fees are paid using the network token. So an NFT operating on.. read more...
